AI and the Future of Medicine

Over the last decade, AI and machine-learning techniques have led to significant advances across many areas of society. Recently, deep learning has emerged as a particularly powerful approach for solving tasks across many domains, including medicine and healthcare. This talk focuses on the potential of AI for personalised diagnosis and prognosis of diseases and the prediction of treatment response. In particular, I show how AI has already transformed the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of images in cardiology, and how frontier and agentic AI models can transform other areas of medicine and healthcare.

Daniel Rückert is Alexander von Humboldt Professor for AI in Medicine and Healthcare at TU Munich, Director of the Institute for AI and Informatics in Medicine, and Professor of Visual Information Processing at Imperial College London. He has published 500+ articles with 100,000+ citations (h-index 137) and is a Fellow of the MICCAI Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, IEEE, and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He received the MICCAI Enduring Impact Award (2024) and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (2025).
