National AI Research Lab (NAIRL) co-hosted the AMI Labs-NAIRL Workshop with AMI Labs on July 10 in Seoul. The workshop brought together researchers and leadership from NAIRL and AMI Labs to share recent research developments and discuss future collaboration opportunities in frontier AI.

AMI Labs is a frontier AI research startup co-founded by Turing Award laureate and New York University professor Yann LeCun. The company aims to build next-generation AI systems approaching human-level intelligence through the development of world models. The workshop was organized to provide a venue for researchers from both sides to share their core research directions, identify areas of mutual interest, and lay the groundwork for sustained research exchange and collaboration.

Following opening remarks, the research presentation sessions were held in an alternating format between NAIRL and AMI Labs. From AMI Labs, researchers including Saining Xie, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, and Mike Rabbat, Co-Founder and VP World Models, participated in the workshop. From NAIRL, researchers from participating institutions including KAIST, Korea University, POSTECH, and Yonsei University joined as presenters, including Jong Chul Ye of KAIST and Seon Joo Kim of Yonsei University. NAIRL’s international partners, including Aaron Courville of Université de Montréal and Pascal Poupart of the University of Waterloo, also took part in the workshop.

Researchers from both sides shared a wide range of frontier AI research topics, including world models, self-supervised learning, multimodal AI, video understanding, and robot learning, and discussed future directions for joint research and collaboration.

In parallel with the research sessions, AMI Labs’ business team also met with selected Korean industry partners to discuss real-world use cases and potential opportunities for future collaboration.

The workshop also included a networking lunch and open exchanges among participants, creating opportunities for researchers, students, and industry collaboration teams from both sides to engage in deeper discussions and explore follow-up collaboration.

NAIRL extends its sincere gratitude to the AMI Labs delegation for joining the workshop. NAIRL will continue to connect Korea’s AI research community with leading frontier AI institutions worldwide and expand international collaboration that links scientific discovery with real-world impact.
