National AI Research Lab (NAIRL) hosted an invited talk by Dr. Karen Zita Haigh, a world-renowned expert and consultant in Cognitive Electronic Warfare and Embedded AI, on October 14, 2025, at the Seoul AI Hub.

Under the theme “Using AI to Solve Complex Problems,” Dr. Haigh introduced how AI can be applied to complex radio frequency (RF) systems, enabling them to respond faster and more efficiently to dynamic environments with complex and novel emitters. She explained how AI techniques such as situation assessment, decision making, and machine learning can operate within RF systems, and showed that Cognitive Radio, Cognitive Radar, and Cognitive Electronic Warfare share the same conceptual framework. The talk also covered how to handle real-time in-mission learning, why this capability matters, and how systems that learn during a mission can be evaluated.

Dr. Haigh is the author of “Cognitive Electronic Warfare: An Artificial Intelligence Approach” (Artech House, 2021) and received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in artificial intelligence and robotics. She is an IEEE Fellow for her contributions to closed-loop control of embedded systems and an AAIA Fellow for her research in smart homes. NAIRL will continue to connect Korea’s research community with leading AI experts from around the world through its invited talk series.
