National AI Research Lab (NAIRL) hosted an invited talk by Myuhng-Joo Kim, President of AI Safety Institute, on May 27, 2025, at the Seoul AI Hub.

Under the theme “Reliable and Safe AI,” President Kim shared perspectives on why safety and trustworthiness must sit at the center of AI development and deployment, and introduced the role of AI Safety Institute, Korea’s dedicated organization for AI safety research. Launched in November 2024 as an affiliate of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the institute works to advance the scientific understanding of AI safety, support Korean companies in securing AI safety, and collaborate with counterpart AI safety institutes around the world.

President Kim is an expert in AI ethics and trustworthiness who received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Computer Engineering from Seoul National University. A professor in the Department of Information Security at Seoul Women’s University, he has served as Director of the RAISE Center, President of the International AI Ethics Association, and Chair of the AI Ethics Policy Forum, and has been active in global discussions on sustainable AI as an expert member of OECD GPAI (Global Partnership on AI). NAIRL will continue to connect Korea’s research community with leading AI experts through its invited talk series.
